Belgian private rail freight operator Lineas will need about 100 million euros in fresh capital if it is to execute the new strategy as envisioned by CEO Bernard Gustin. Among other things, the company wants to get back into the black starting in 2025.
The Belgian government has earmarked 250 million euros for investment in rail in the current budget. Rail freight in particular stands to benefit, with 181 million euros to be channelled in that direction.

The action plan in Belgium to double the volume of rail freight transport by 2030 has been approved by the government. On Friday 30 September, the Council of Ministers approved the plan that was proposed a year ago. 26 concrete actions are now on the table to make “the backbone of tomorrow’s mobility” in Belgium.
Starting on Friday 14 September, Belgian operator NMBS/SNCB will offer a monthly train pass at half price for domestic train travel. The move is intended to entice people to use the train for their daily commutes. The discount comes in the wake of several other promotional initiatives all over Europe.
